ALERT Newsletter

ALERT NEWSLETTER — July 2008 Vol. 2 No. 1 Hi everyone & welcome to your ALERT Newsletter. With this newsletter I begin my second term as ALERT President. The first thing I want to say is “thank you” for your support and your work, which made the first term a success. It’s YOUR work and efforts that have made possible the things we have done. Among the achievements of the last year were the revision and ratification of our Constitution and Bylaws, the revival of Board or Directors meetings, and our obtaining 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. 2007 — 2008 was a year that focused on restructuring & strengthening the ALERT organization. During 2008 — 2009 we will, while continuing work in this area, begin a push in training. Our operators need to know how to use the tools and technology — both old and new — which we have at our disposal. </strong Continue reading
ALERT NEWSLETTER — June 2008 Vol. 1 No. 12 Hi Everyone, June has arrived & with its arrival begins the North Atlantic Hurricane Season, which will last until the end of November. To help celebrate the arrival we already have Tropical Depression Arthur, which is inland over Mexico & dissipating. Arthur was originally an East Pacific storm named Alma, but, passed over Central America into the Caribbean, and reformed, regendered & was renamed. It reminds me of a few years ago a storm formed in the Eastern Atlantic, crossed the Caribbean & struck Central America. It reformed off the Pacific side & was renamed. It continued westward passing south of Hawaii & crossed the International Date Line & was renamed again & finally dissipated off shores of Malaysia. I was disappointed. I wanted it to cross the Malay Peninsula & enter the Bay of Bengal & regenerate. Then it would have had the distinction of being a hurricane, a typhoon & a tropical cyclone. As it is it crossed two thirds of the Earth’s surface. Not a wimpy feat, in my book. Ot Continue reading
ALERT NEWSLETTER — May 2008 Vol. 1 No. 11 Hi Everyone, May has arrived & we know what May is…. It’s BirmingHamfest Month! ALERT will have a booth there. I’ll be there. And, you better had be there too. I remember my first hamfest back in 1978. I was a Novice & didn’t know really what to expect. But, what I found was a young ham’s version of The Promised Land. I had never seen so many toys, gizmos & equipment. Flashing blinking lights. I like flashing blinking lights. I was broke, of course, as usual…as today…but that didn’t matter. I could touch the stuff anyway. And, so many hams. Some not very pretty, but, hams none-the-less. I passed my Technician test that hamfest. I was trying for my General, but my code was mushy, so the Technician was the consolation prize. But, I loved it. There is a Continue reading
ALERT NEWSLETTER — April 2008 Vol. 1 No. 10http://www.alert-alabama.org Remembering April 8, 1998 It’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed since the night of the F5 tornado that ripped through Western Jefferson County. I remember it as if it were yesterday. I was with my family that night. Dad was sick & I was helping Mom out. I remember the storm in Tuscaloosa County & the damage reports coming in. I remember as it crossed the Warrior River & Mom asking me “It’s heading for us isn’t it?” & me saying “Yes”. I remember hearing reports of damage in Oak Grove & Sylvan Springs & as it scraped Pleasant Grove, hearing on the scanner the Fairfield Police saying, “it’s on the border of Wylam & Fairfield” & me thinking “that’s us”. I remember going outside as it neared & hearing — nothing. Silence quieter than death. Almost like my ears were plugged, that silent. And, the unceasing lightning — like a florescent bulb going bad. Lightning all around me, but not a sound to be heard. And, then the roar. A faintr Continue reading
