ALERT Newsletter

ALERT NEWSLETTER – November 2008 Vol. 2 No. 5 Hi everybody and welcome to the November ALERT Newsletter. Ever wonder why some decisions and positions are made and who actually makes them? Well, maybe it would be helpful to describe our Totem Poles. The National Weather Service is ALERT’s served agency. ALERT must abide by the NWS rules and mandates & tries to the best of it’s abilities to fulfill the NWS’s wishes & assist in it’s mission to save lives. The NWS is mindful that we are limited in what we can do since we are a volunteer organization & that, as in my case, while I would love to “do weather” all the time, my employer might have other ideas on the matter. The NWS in Birmingham is subject to the rules and wishes of the Southern Regional Headquarters & the mandates of Washington DC. Whether they agree with a Regional or National level decision doesn’t really matter. They have to do what their “bosses” say, just as we as we have to do what our bosses say at our work. So, if the NWS inB Continue reading
Hi everybody and welcome the October ALERT Newsletter.Yesterday Alabama conducted the annual Simulated Emergency Test. ALERT was activated & K4NWS was manned, taking simulated storm reports via RF and the Spotter Chat. Initially there was some concern about participation, since there were two conflicting events to work against, that being Alabama vs Kentucky & the race in Talladega, but there seemed to be plenty of people out there contributing. Band conditions were good & weather conditions were good, even with a land falling hurricane & tornadoes rearranging all of Central Alabama. And despite the state being devastated from one end to the other, it was fun. Very, very hectic at times, but, fun. A full report on the SET will be given at our meeting October 14, which will give you an incentive to be there. And, if you don’t come, we are going to talk about you, as we usually do. So consider yourself forewarned….;-)See you then. Continue reading
ALERT NEWSLETTER – September 2008 Vol. 2 No. 3 Hi Everyone, Over the past few month’s meetings we have discussed the Weather Chats & possible protocols for relaying messages. After much thought and input, here is the suggested protocol for such relays. In the event that Skywarn organizations such as Central Alabama Skywarn, Tuscaloosa Skywarn, or an individual Storm Spotter is unable to contact the NWS directly via the Spotter chat, an ALERT member will respond & let them know they are relaying their report to the NWS. The ALERT member will then copy the report, go to the IEM chat & post the report in the following manner: “Central Alabama Skywarn reports that…” (paste in their report), and, immediately post the report. Adding no commentary to the report (just as you would not add commentary to a NTS radiogram). If the NWS asks for more details, respond, keeping it businesslike & “professional”, and relay their request and the replies. Other Continue reading
ALERT NEWSLETTER — August 2008 Vol. 2 No. 2 Hi everyone & welcome to your ALERT Newsletter. I hope you are not melting in this August heat. This time of year is why the Lord created ice-cold watermelons & vanilla ice cream. I remember the story of one August when my Mom cooked a BIG pot of vegetable soup & my Dad was eating it & melting from the heat & he said “if you ever make soup again in August I’ll kill you”. He didn’t kill her, but he did put a killing on that pot of soup. This August seems to be being blessed with many summer thunderstorms, but our “prime time” for severe weather is still a few months away. This season is the perfect time to review our systems and plans and work out any bugs that appear. One thing we should make sure of is that we have several ways to reach the NWS & not rely on any one method. For “things happen” and we must always be prepared to switch to Plan B or C. How do I reach t Continue reading
