ShakeOut Tip: Complete our event form to be listed on the ShakeOut calendar The 2013 Great Central US ShakeOut on October 17 is next week! Registration continues to increase, thanks to participants like you who are spreading the word.More than 22 million people are now registered worldwide for 2013.
Be sure to review the How to Participate and Resources sections of the website for drill manuals and instructions for various situations.
Earthquake Safety is in Your Hands
A great extra step for after your "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" drill is to practice how you will communicate after a damaging earthquake. Learn how to "Text First. Talk Second."from ShakeOut partner Safe America Foundation, including how to hold a texting drill.
Your mobile phone can also help you get ready for an earthquake and respond quickly afterward. With the American Red Cross Earthquake Appyou can receive alerts and notifications when an earthquake occurs, prepare your family and home, find help, and let others know you are safe.
Finally, be sure to use your phone (or another camera) to take pictures and videos of your ShakeOut drill. Then share these via social media (use #shakeout). Also visitwww.shakeout.org/centralus/share to upload photos, share links to videos you've posted online, and write a description of your drill. We will highlight great examples in our email updates to ShakeOut participants next year.

The Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety
ShakeOut update emails this year have been highlighting each of the Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety, recommendations for what to do before, during, and after earthquakes. Following these steps is an optional aspect of your ShakeOut participation that may improve your preparedness for a big earthquake or other emergencies. If you have registered recently, please review previous emails that you may have missed.
Step 5: Drop, Cover and Hold On
When the earth shakes: DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON! The farther you move while the ground is shaking, the more likely you are to be hurt.
In most situations:
* DROP down onto your hands and knees (before the earthquake knocks you down). This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move
if necessary.
* COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby, ONLY then should you get down near an interior wall (or next to low-lying furniture that won’t fall on you), and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.
* HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around. If you are in bed: stay in bed, and cover your head with a pillow. People get injured when they get up and move around.
If you are outside: first drop then crawl towards open space if you can – stay away from building exteriors, overhead power lines and trees.
If you are near the shore: if you feel a strong or long lasting earthquake, or the water suddenly draws back from the beach, tsunami waves may arrive within minutes. As soon as it is safe to move, go immediately to higher ground or inland away from the coast.
Additional Situations and Resources:

* Key Earthquake Safety Tips for People with Disabilities and Other Access or Functional Needs (PDF | RTF)

Who will ShakeOut with You?
Everyone, everywhere, should know how to protect themselves in an earthquake. Even if earthquakes are rare where you live, they may happen where you or your family travel, or perhaps where you or your children may live one day.Sobe sure to invite your friends, family, and colleagues to participate in this year's ShakeOut. A one minute Drop, Cover, and Hold On earthquake drill may one day minimizeinjuries or save their life. Spread the word at family gatherings, community events, and work meetings, and online via social media. You can also place one of the ShakeOut web banners on your organization's website, distribute flyers, and use other materials available on the ShakeOut Resourcespage.
Thank you for your participation in this historic event and for your commitment to disaster preparedness!
